Stacked Deck, the 1977 follow-up to Rusty Wier's classic Black Hat Saloon, is one of the finest records of his career, and one of the most surreal. Leaving Nash Vegas completely out of the picture this time, Stacked Deck was recorded entirely in California. It is a dirtier, funkier affair than Black Hat, which has at its root the city of New Orleans as its inspiration. Why it wasn't recorded there is anybody's guess, but New Orleans via L. and its studio musicians is quite a concept, don't you think . Rusty Wier - Stacked Deck 1977. To favorites 2 Download album. Give a listen to his version of Lola written by Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham or Black Molly Blues and you'll hear what I mean. On Black Hat Saloon, Wier connects with a part of Texas honky-tonk story telling. Each song is a well-painted picture, described in a way that only Wier can. Here's a tip to those in the music biz: it would be smart to release a compilation CD, including tracks from his other albums, including Don't It Make You Wanna Dance.
