The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Children's Chorus, The Manhattan Opera Chorus. Manufactured and marketed by PolyGram Classics & Jazz. This is a problem recording, and even fans of Leonard Bernstein and Marilyn Horne will find it odd. The Maestro's tempi are weirdly slow, Horne sings the role note-by-note rather than phrase-by-phrase, and when she finally does decide to emote, in the final scene, she sounds like she's gone loony. James McCracken was an artist with a huge but unappealing voice who also had brains and power, bu. Georges Bizet. Upcoming Performances. Georges Bizet 18381875 was known as a brilliant student and prodigy, but his works only found lasting success after his untimely death-most notably Carmen, which premiered three months before he died. Librettist Henri Meilhac 18311897 would subsequently provide the libretto for Massenets Manon 1884. His collaborator on Carmen was Ludovic Halévy 18341908, the nephew of composer Jacques Fromental Halévy creator of the opera La Juive and Bizets father-in-law. The libretto is based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée 18031870, a French dramatist, historian, and archaeologist. Mrime had read the poem in Russian by 1840 and translated it into French in 1852.
