Drive Like Jehu is the self-titled debut album by the American post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu, released in 1991 by Cargo Music and Headhunter Records. Though not as highly regarded as their second and final album Yank Crime, the album did gain the notice of the emerging noise rock and math rock movements, which would later lead many fans to regard Drive Like Jehu as a link between these genres. The album also helped to attract the attention of major record labels, leading both Drive Like Jehu and. Including some longer, more complex tunes this time around, Drive Like Jehu is otherwise essentially unchanged, fusing brawling, crisp rhythms and high volume intensity with technical complexity, feeling like a mad science experiment gone completely out of control. Aside from the guest backing vocals on the frazzled angst explosion Luau by fellow San Diego music fiend Rob Crow, it's again all down to the band's four members, with drummer Trombino providing the strong, take-no-prisoners mix. San Diego's Drive Like Jehu were always Old Testament kinda guys: locusts, rats, frogs- you name it, they could summon it forth from their amps with a simple touch of pick to string if you claimed to worship any Band before them. Now, hardness of that scale can tend to push a group toward the fringe, but for DLJ, it led to indecent propositions from Interscope, an improbably good album you know, the one you're reading about, and, even more improbably, a place in the indie rock canon that seems to have been progressively solidifying since the moment they split up. In an alternate universe, Yank Crime is looked to as one of the most influential albums of the 90's. While there were other great bands who influenced post-hardcore in the 90's like Fugazi and Slint, they didn't play with the same energy and ferocity that these guys did. I believe that one day, down the road, these guys will be looked to as a band who was truly ahead of their time. It's such a shame this was the end of the band, but they all went on to other great projects. Drive Like Jehu are one of the most criminally under-appreciated post-hardcore bands youll find that arent really post-hardcore at all. Bands like Fugazi, At the Drive-In, Refused, and Escape the Fate kidding always get all the glory, while Drive Like Jehu gets lumped in as that Rockets From the Crypt side project that had even more loud guitars. While they never reached the critical or commercial success any of those other bands accomplished, Yank Crime does at least have one thing going for it it pretty much set up the foundations for Relationship of Command
