Symphony , In E Minor: Moderato. Symphony , In E Minor: Allegro. Symphony , In E Minor: Allegretto. Symphony , In E Minor: Andante-allergro. Orchestra: Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Evgeny Mravinsky. Mravinsky was the authoritative conductor of Shostakovich, who dedicated three of his symphonies to him, as well as the upholder of the most disciplined standards in Russian orchestral playing. The standards still were not stellar - the Soviet sound included sour winds and watery horns - but this Shostakovich Tenth is engrossing and vital form start to finish. The Symphony No. 10 in E minor Op. 93 by Dmitri Shostakovich was premiered by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Yevgeny Mravinsky on 17 December 1953, following the death of Joseph Stalin in March of that year. It is not clear when it was written: according to the composer's letters composition was between July and October 1953, but Tatiana Nikolayeva stated that it was completed in 1951. This was Shostakovich's first symphony in eight years, and the gap between this and the 1945 Ninth owed nothing to a lack of inspiration in the genre. In 1948, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Khachaturian, and other noted Soviet composers were censured for writing what party censors called formalistic music, a code word for dissonance and the expression of negative emotions or cynicism. 10 was premiered in Leningrad on December 17, 1953, under the baton of Yevgeny Mravinsky. It has become, with the Symphony No. 5, Shostakovich's most often performed and recorded symphony. Album 2000 4 Songs. By Dmitri Shostakovich. Symphony No. 10 in E Minor, Op. 93: II. 93: III. 93: IV.
